We rank products based on their value to you — not on the size of the commission we earn. Here is exactly how our editorial process works, how every product is scored, and what drives every recommendation on this site.
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's 2024 Circular on digital comparison-shopping tools warns that ranking products based on commission rather than consumer benefit can constitute an abusive practice. WiseIQ is designed from the ground up to comply with this standard. Our ranking algorithm weights user benefit factors — approval likelihood, rates, fees, and goal alignment — not commission size. We disclose all affiliate relationships transparently on every page.
WiseIQ earns a commission when you apply for and are approved for a financial product through our links. This is how we keep the site free. We are transparent about this on every page.
However, commission size does not determine where a product ranks. A product that pays us $200 per approval will not rank above a product that pays $50 if the $50 product is a better fit for your credit profile and financial situation. We believe this is both the right thing to do and the only sustainable business model — users who get approved for the right product come back. Users who get declined because we steered them toward a high-commission product they did not qualify for do not.
Our editorial team reviews all rankings quarterly and maintains independence from our commercial partnerships team.
We assess the realistic minimum credit score required for approval based on issuer guidelines and publicly reported approval data. Products are only shown as "Strong Match" when your score meets the typical approval threshold.
We evaluate the APR range, annual fee, foreign transaction fees, balance transfer fees, and any other costs. Lower-cost products are scored more favorably, all else being equal.
For rewards cards, we calculate the estimated annual value based on average American spending patterns. We use the same methodology for every card so comparisons are apples-to-apples.
We review the full card agreement including penalty APRs, grace periods, minimum payment requirements, and any terms that could negatively affect cardholders.
We consider J.D. Power customer satisfaction scores, CFPB complaint data, and user reviews when evaluating issuers. A product from an issuer with poor customer service is scored down accordingly.
When you complete our quiz, your stated goal (build credit, earn rewards, reduce debt, etc.) influences which products appear at the top of your personalized results. A cash-back card will not rank first for someone whose goal is travel rewards.
When you complete the WiseIQ quiz, each product receives a match score from 0–100 based on your specific profile. The five factors below are weighted by their impact on whether a product is genuinely right for you — not by what benefits WiseIQ commercially. Here is exactly how the weighting works:
Commission rates paid to WiseIQ are not included in this calculation. A product that pays a higher commission does not receive a higher match score as a result.
The table below shows exactly how each factor is scored. Every product on WiseIQ is evaluated against this rubric by our editorial team before it appears on the site.
| Factor | What We Measure | Score: Strong (8–10) | Score: Average (5–7) | Score: Weak (1–4) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Credit Score Fit | Minimum approval score vs. user's stated score range | User score ≥ threshold | Within 30 pts of threshold | Below threshold |
| Rate & Fee Value | APR, annual fee, foreign transaction fee, balance transfer fee | 0% intro APR or no annual fee with strong rewards | Annual fee justified by rewards value | High APR + annual fee with limited rewards |
| Goal Alignment | Match between user's stated goal and product's primary benefit | Primary benefit matches stated goal exactly | Partial match or secondary benefit aligns | No meaningful alignment with stated goal |
| Rewards Value | Estimated annual value based on average U.S. spending ($1,500/mo) | >$300 estimated annual value | $100–$300 estimated annual value | <$100 or no rewards program |
| Issuer Reputation | J.D. Power score, CFPB complaint index, app store rating | Top-quartile J.D. Power + low CFPB complaints | Average satisfaction scores | Below-average satisfaction or elevated complaints |
Every product on WiseIQ goes through a structured review process before it is published and on a recurring quarterly cycle thereafter.
Products labeled "Editor's Pick" have been selected by our editorial team as the best overall option in their category based on the criteria above. These designations are reviewed quarterly. A product can lose its Editor's Pick status if its terms change, if better alternatives emerge, or if issuer reputation data deteriorates.
Editor's Pick products may or may not pay higher commissions than non-featured products. The designation is based solely on editorial merit.
WiseIQ has affiliate relationships with financial institutions and affiliate networks including FlexOffers. When you click an "Apply Now" button and are approved for a product, WiseIQ typically earns a commission. The commission amount varies by product and institution.
