Our take in 10 seconds
At 740+, rank lenders by
fees first, APR second — origination fees of 1-10% are where excellent-credit borrowers get quietly beaten, and the best prime lenders charge none. Our partner Upstart charges origination on many loans, which is why it's usually not our pick at this tier (the exception below is real but narrow). And before any personal loan: if you own a home and the amount is large,
equity almost always prices better.
The field
Who actually wins at 740+
| Lender type | The honest call for excellent credit |
No-fee prime lenders (LightStream, SoFi, major banks — none pay us) | Usually the winner. Zero origination, low advertised floors that 740+ files actually get, rate-beat programs. Start here. |
| Your own bank or credit union | Frequently competitive with relationship discounts — and credit unions cap rates. Always worth one quote. |
| Upstart (our partner) | Usually loses at this tier on fees — except for thin-file, new-to-country, or unusual-income borrowers, where its model can beat prime lenders' rigid underwriting. |
| 0% intro credit cards | For amounts you can clear in 12-21 months, this beats every loan on the list. Excellent credit qualifies for the longest windows. |
| Home equity (if you own) | For $25k+, a HELOC or equity loan at 740+ pricing usually beats any unsecured rate. |
The exception
When Upstart genuinely wins at 740+
Prime lenders underwrite on history: years of accounts, W-2 income, conventional employment. If your 740+ comes with a thin or short file — young professional, recent immigrant with a fast-built score, self-employed with lumpy income — their models can price you strangely or decline outright despite the number. Upstart's underwriting weighs education and employment, which is precisely the file it handles better. That's the honest, narrow case for our partner at this tier:
The thin-file exception — worth a look if this is youHigh score, short history, or unusual income? Upstart's model can out-offer prime lenders for exactly that file. Soft pull to find out.

Fee math to run before signing anywhere: a loan at a slightly lower APR with a 5% origination fee routinely costs more than a slightly higher APR with no fee — on $20,000, a 5% fee is $1,000 gone at signing. At excellent credit you never need to pay origination unless the file exception above applies. Compare total repayment cost, not APR alone.
The bigger question
Is a personal loan even the right tool?
Excellent credit opens tools that beat personal loans for specific jobs. Consolidating cards you can clear inside two years? A 0% intro card is cheaper. Renovation or other large project as a homeowner? Equity borrowing at your tier is usually several points cheaper on much longer terms. Car purchase? Dedicated auto financing beats a personal loan on rate every time. A personal loan wins at 740+ mainly for mid-size unsecured needs on a fixed schedule — a fine tool, just not the default one.

Questions
FAQ
What APR should I get on a personal loan with excellent credit?
The advertised floor rates — typically the mid-single to low-double digits depending on term and market — are written for you. If a quote comes back well above a lender's advertised minimum with a 740+ score, shop elsewhere; something other than your score is being priced.
Are personal loans worth it with excellent credit?
For mid-size unsecured borrowing on a fixed payoff schedule, yes. But excellent credit qualifies you for tools that beat them at specific jobs: 0% intro cards for short-horizon debt, home equity for large amounts, dedicated auto loans for cars.
Should I avoid lenders with origination fees at 740+?
As a default, yes — the best prime lenders charge none, so a fee needs justification. The exception is when flexible underwriting gets you an approval or rate rigid lenders won't give: thin files, non-traditional income, new credit histories.
Why would Upstart beat a prime lender for someone with excellent credit?
Only for unusual files. Prime lenders price deep, conventional history; a high score built quickly, self-employment income, or a short U.S. credit history can trip their models. Upstart's education-and-employment underwriting reads those files better — that's the narrow case.
Do multiple loan quotes hurt my excellent credit?
Not meaningfully — most quotes are soft-pull pre-qualifications, and at 740+ even hard inquiries cost a few points against a large buffer. Failing to compare costs far more than comparing ever will.
