Here's a mistake that costs service members and veterans real approval power: entering only taxable pay on a loan application. If you're active duty, your Basic Allowance for Housing and Basic Allowance for Subsistence are non-taxable — they never show up in the "income" box of your tax return — but they are real, steady, documentable income, and lenders can count them. On a typical E-5 profile, BAH alone can be well over $1,500 a month depending on duty station. Leaving it off an application is like hiding a second job from the underwriter.
One caution to balance it: counting more income raises what you can borrow, not what you should. PCS moves, deployment, and separation timelines change budgets fast — size the payment to survive your next duty change, not your current LES. And if any lender near a base is pitching you a loan against your allowances at double-digit fees, that's not a benefit, that's a target on your back; the SCRA's 6% cap on pre-service debt and the Military Lending Act's 36% MAPR ceiling exist because that targeting is real.
