What Liberty Mutual is
Liberty Mutual is one of the largest property and casualty insurers in the United States, founded in Boston in 1912 and still headquartered there. It sells auto, home, renters, condo, motorcycle and life insurance directly online, by phone, and through independent agents. It carries an A (Excellent) financial strength rating from AM Best, which means the money will be there when a claim is paid. Its marketing line, "only pay for what you need," points at the thing it does differently from most big carriers: you choose coverage pieces individually instead of picking a bundle.
Is Liberty Mutual cheap?
Usually not. Published 2026 rate studies put Liberty Mutual's average full coverage premium above the national average, and its minimum coverage rate above average as well. That doesn't mean it will be expensive for you. Car insurance is priced on your record, your car, your ZIP code and, in most states, your credit, and every carrier weighs those differently. Liberty Mutual is sometimes the cheapest option for a specific driver and often not. Treat the average as a reason to compare, not a reason to skip the quote.
| Factor | How Liberty Mutual tends to price it |
|---|---|
| Clean record, good credit | Mid-pack. GEICO and Progressive are often cheaper for this profile. |
| Accident or ticket | Surcharges are in line with the industry. Accident forgiveness is available as an add-on, and it only helps if you bought it before the crash. |
| Young driver | Good student and student-away discounts help. Base rates for under 25 are still high everywhere. |
| Bundler | This is where it competes. Multi-policy discounts on home or renters plus auto are among the larger ones in the market. |
| Careful driver willing to be tracked | RightTrack is the strongest argument for Liberty Mutual. See below. |

RightTrack: how it works and who should use it
RightTrack is Liberty Mutual's usage-based program. You enroll, use the app or a plug-in device for a review period of about 90 days, and your driving is scored on braking, acceleration, time of day and mileage. You get a participation discount for signing up, typically in the 5% to 10% range, and a final discount of up to 30% based on the score. In most states the discount is locked in for the life of the policy once the review period ends.
Two honest caveats. First, in some states the program can raise your rate if the data shows risky driving, so read the enrollment terms for your state. Second, the app needs location permission running in the background and it will log late-night trips and hard stops, including the ones that weren't your fault. If you drive mostly in daylight, keep following distance, and don't mind the tracking, RightTrack is a genuine way to make Liberty Mutual cheaper than its averages suggest. If you drive for work at night, skip it.
How Liberty Mutual handles claims
The signals point in different directions, so here they are side by side. In J.D. Power's 2025 U.S. Auto Claims Satisfaction Study, Liberty Mutual scored 730 against a study average of 700, which placed it near the top. At the same time, the NAIC complaint index, which measures complaints to state regulators relative to a company's size, has run above 1.0 for Liberty Mutual's auto line in recent years, meaning more complaints than expected. And the CRASH Network report card, which surveys collision repair shops on how insurers handle repairs, gave Liberty Mutual a D+ in 2026, near the bottom of the ranked insurers.
Read together: customers who go through a straightforward claim tend to rate the experience well, repair shops find the company difficult to work with on parts and labor, and a meaningful number of policyholders escalate to regulators. If you own a newer car and care about OEM parts, that repair-shop grade is the number to weigh.
What you can add
| Option | Worth it when |
|---|---|
| Accident forgiveness | You have a clean record now and want to protect the rate from one mistake. |
| New car replacement | Your car is less than a year old. Pays for a new one instead of depreciated value if it's totaled. |
| Better car replacement | Your car is a few years old; pays for one model year newer with fewer miles. |
| Gap coverage | You financed with little down. Covers the difference between the loan and the car's value. |
| Deductible fund | You'd struggle to pay a $1,000 deductible. Lowers it over time for a small monthly charge. |
| Rental reimbursement, roadside | Standard add-ons; price them against a club membership. |
Who should pick Liberty Mutual
Pick it if you bundle home or renters with auto, you want to pick coverage line by line, or you're a careful driver who will actually use RightTrack. Skip it as a first choice if you're a minimum-coverage shopper with a clean record, where GEICO and Progressive usually win on price, or if you qualify for USAA. For everyone else it earns a spot as the second quote, and the gap between two quotes is where most people's savings are.
