Our take in 10 seconds
There is no best personal loan, only the best one for your credit tier and your file. Under about 680, Upstart's education-and-employment underwriting is the strongest approval odds with honest pricing. At 720+, no-fee prime lenders win on pure math and we send you there. Bad credit with a car or savings to pledge points to a secured option.

Why this score: Loses cost points to origination fees; wins access and speed for underwriting that reaches into the 500s and funds next day.

Origination fee 0–12% on many loans, but approvals reach into the 500s and thin files price on more than the number. Soft-pull rate check, funding often next day.

How we score

The five criteria

CostRates and fees relative to the credit tier served. Origination and admin fees weigh heavily.
AccessHow far down the credit ladder the product actually approves, and how it treats thin files.
SpeedTime from application to money, quote, or first reported payment.
TransparencyClear pricing before a hard pull, plain disclosures, no bait terms.
FitHow many real situations it serves well, not just the ideal customer.

Scores use published terms, our own application tests, and reader reports. Facts are re-checked quarterly and after any partner change. Full method on our how we rank page.

Questions

FAQ

How are the lenders scored?
Each lender gets a 1–10 score on cost, access, speed, transparency and fit, using published terms and our own application tests. The five scores are averaged into the overall. Partners are scored on the same rubric and labeled.
Your partner is ranked first overall. Should I trust that?
Check the columns, not just the average. Upstart tops the overall because access and fit weigh the same as cost in our rubric and it serves the widest range of borrowers. On cost alone it is mid-pack and LightStream wins. If your credit is 720+, ignore the overall and use the cost column; we say the same thing in the picks table.
What credit score do you need for a personal loan?
Depends on the lender: prime lenders want roughly 680+, fair-credit lenders start around 580–600, and a few consider lower with collateral. Use the 'best for' column to match your tier.
Are origination fees worth paying?
Only when they buy an approval or rate you can't get elsewhere. At 720+ you should never pay one. Under 680, a fee-charging lender with a real approval often beats a no-fee lender's decline.
How often is this scoreboard updated?
We re-check terms quarterly and after any partner change. The 'who gets paid' box on this page updates the same day a relationship changes.
